  2. Please note the following changes. The In Situ Resource Utilization (ISRU) workshop that was scheduled for June 5, 2000, is now going to be held simultaneously (June 6-8) with the Materials Science Conference at the Von Braun Center. For more information, see Conference at a glance. All authors scheduled for Oral and Poster presentations will be notified.
  3. Please register as soon as possible! Room and special rate availability at the Huntsville Hilton is not guaranteed beyond May 10, 2000. In order to obtain the conference rate at the Huntsville Hilton Hotel please call the hotel direct at 256-533-1400.
  4. NASA employees do not have to pay registration fees but will be charged for food (details on the registration page). However, everyone should register so that we can expedite badging and meal planning.

Announcement

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s Microgravity Research Division (MRD) will sponsor a microgravity materials science program review on June 6 - 8, 2000, at the Von Braun Center, Huntsville, Alabama, in conjunction with its Materials Science NASA Research Announcement (NRA) Conference. This conference is being organized by the Microgravity Materials Science Discipline Working Group (DWG) and hosted by the Marshall Space Flight Center, which is now the lead center for Microgravity Materials Science. This is the fourth conference of this type in the microgravity materials science discipline. All ground-based and flight materials science projects supported by the Microgravity Science and Applications Division will participate in this review.

Conference Venue

In Situ Resource Utilization Workshop (ISRU)

In conjunction with the conference, a workshop on ISRU with the goal of evaluating and prioritizing processing issues in Lunar and Martian type environments will be held on June 6-8, 2000. The workshop will feature invited speakers and investigators currently funded in the NASA Materials Science Program under the Human Exploration and Development of Space (HEDS) initiative.

Workshop Venue

Von Braun Center
North Hall

Purpose

  • To inform the materials science community of research opportunities in reduced gravity and highlight the fall 2000 release of the NASA Research Announcement (NRA) to solicit proposals for future investigations.
  • To review the existing research, assess the present programmatic content, and evaluate how these meet long-term program goals.

Who should attend

The conference is geared to provide a current review of NASA activities in Materials Science, to discuss the envisioned long term goals, and to highlight new crosscutting research areas of particular interest to MRD. It is targeted towards materials science researchers from academia, industry and government.

Goals

  • To present the status of the existing and planned NASA Microgravity Materials Science research programs.
  • To stimulate new ideas and expand the community's interest in microgravity materials science research.
  • To provide information about upcoming NASA Research Announcements.
  • To identify opportunities in reduced gravity materials science research that would benefit existing and emerging applications areas.
  • To increase the emphasis on materials related issues relating to Human Exploration and Development of Space, such as radiation shielding and in situ resource utilization.
  • To provide NASA with the scientific community's input on the future of microgravity materials science research.
