Projection of the Ulysses footpoint onto LASCO images

  • Six LASCO C2 images are shown here. Superimposed on each image is a line at the equator and another line at an angle of 58o south of the equator on the east limb. This is the direction to Ulysses.

  •
  • In the first panel, 5 June 2000, the direction to Ulysses appears to lie in a small, rapidly diverging coronal hole.

  •
  • In the second through the sixth panels, on 6, 8, 11, 15, and 18 June, there is no visible coronal hole.

  •

It appears from this information that the Ulysses footpoint may have been in a coronal hole early in the quadrature interval but in the streamer belt at all later times.
