IMPACT ARC Team Delivers Metadata Quality Reports to the Physical Oceanography Distributed Active Archive Center (PO.DAAC)

The Analysis and Review of the Common Metadata Repository (ARC) team out of IMPACT recently completed an assessment of metadata records cataloging all data products from the PO.DAAC. The team delivered a series of metadata quality reports to PO. DAAC highlighting opportunities for improvement in their metadata to better facilitate discoverability, accessibility, and usability of their Earth observation data products in the broader NASA Earth science data system.

To date, the ARC team has completed an initial detailed assessment of metadata holdings from nine out of the twelve NASA Earth science data centers (DAACs). The recent PO.DAAC assessment involved reviewing the metadata content for 637 data products via a combination of automated and manual methods and resulted in 14,054 individual findings of which 4,063 were flagged as high priority, 4,188 as medium priority, and 5,803 as low priority. The data center will have the opportunity to address the reported findings and the ARC team will track the improvements made over time.
