Space Apps Challenge 2022 Event – Make a Moonquake App!

Paul Bremner (ST13) and Daniel O’Neil (MSFC-CS10) developed and led “Make a Moonquake Map!” Space Apps Challenge this year. Michael Zanetti (ST13) and Jennifer Edmunson (ST23) joined Paul and Daniel as subject matter experts during the challenge and will help judge submissions. Our challenge invited participants to create a visual map, globe, and/or animation of moonquakes recorded by the Apollo seismometers, and to cascade those quakes in time on the map as waveforms or shaking.

This year’s Space Apps Challenge event took place 10/1-2/22. There were 31,000+ participants (largest number of participants, ever) across 323 locations in 160+ countries and 11 space agencies around the world. There were >4,000 universal event participants. Our Marshall team joined 140+ online subject matter experts to support 5,300+ teams through their projects and yielded 3,000+ project submissions! The “Make a Moonquake Map!” challenge garnered over 506 registrations with 142 teams and 86 project submissions. Project judging is ongoing, and the Global Winners will be announced on 12/8/22 this year.
